Editor’s Note: MSJDN asked its members to help us spotlight employers going above and beyond for military spouse attorneys. Each employer in this series was nominated for the 2017 MSJDN Members’ Choice Award by members who told us in their own words about the awesomeness of their employers. MSJDN is thrilled to tell these stories as a way of expressing our gratitude for employers supporting military spouses as they build careers in the legal profession.

The MSJDN Members’ Choice Award recipient will be announced at MSJDN’s Annual Reception in Washington, D.C. on May 10th.

MultiCare Health System, based in Tacoma, Washington, is a not-for-profit healthcare organization that operates clinics and hospitals in Washington’s South Sound region.  In close proximity to Joint Base Lewis-McChord, an installation utilized by both Air Force and Army, MultiCare Health System services a large community of military veterans and their dependents.

Additionally, MultiCare Health System actively recruits veterans and active-duty dependents.  As a pro-military organization, MultiCare Health System works with employees who are spouses of active-duty service members to develop flexible arrangements to maintain employment, even following PCS moves.

For MSJDN member Holly Jacoby, MultiCare Health System allowed her to work remotely full-time after her spouse received PCS orders to Ft. Irwin, CA.  MultiCare Health System further supports its attorney employees by providing sponsorship for Continuing Legal Education (CLEs), health law certifications, and other knowledge and skill-building events.

Due to MultiCare Health System’s pro-military hiring efforts, many of the organization’s employees have a direct connection to the military either as veterans, spouses, or children.  “In my departmental office of eight female employees, each one of us has a direct, immediate family connection to the military through parents, spouses, siblings, and/or children,” states Jacoby.

Jacoby is especially grateful for MultiCare Health System’s efforts to ensure her continued employment after her latest PCS move.  “Given Ft. Irwin’s very remote location in the Mojave Desert, the job prospects for all military spouses (JDs and otherwise) are very limited.  If MultiCare hadn’t been willing to allow me to continue to work remotely, at best I would have been underemployed, but it is more likely that I would have been unemployed altogether,” says Jacoby.

MSJDN is pleased to recognize the well-deserved nomination of MultiCare Health System for the 2017 Members’ Choice Award!
