On June 9th, 2023, four Military Spouse J.D. Network members, at the invitation of First Lady of the United States of America, Dr. Jill Biden, had the opportunity to bear witness to the signing of the Strengthen Economic Opportunity for Military and Veteran Spouses, Caregivers and Survivors Executive Order by President Joe Biden.

Maj Samantha Sliney (active duty Air Force JAG married to an active duty Soldier), Capt Nichole Timmreck (active duty Air Force JAG married to an active duty Soldier), Jessica Tuttle (Department of the Army federal civilian married to an active duty Soldier) and Rachel Marshall (Department of the Army federal civilian married to an active duty Soldier) took part in the historic event that is a culmination of the efforts of the First Lady’s Joining Forces initiative.

Joining Forces, started in 2011 by then-First Lady Michelle Obama and Second Lady Dr. Jill Biden, is a nationwide initiative calling all Americans to rally around service members, veterans, and their families and support them through wellness, education and employment opportunities. The initiative aims to support those who also serve: military and veteran families, caregivers and survivors. It’s focus areas include employment and entrepreneurship, military child education and health and well-being.

Libby Jamison, MSJDN founding member and Joining Forces Senior Advisor, played a key role in the development of the Executive Order and the opportunity for MSJDN members to attend the signing. Libby, a Board of Veteran’s Appeal attorney advisor, is serving out a one-year special detail on the Joining Forces staff. This is her second special detail on the Joining Forces staff.

The Executive Order addresses many problems areas that impact military and veteran spouses, caregivers and survivors to include many issues that military spouse attorneys must overcome to maintain career while supporting their service member.

While there is still much work to be done to address the national security imperative that is military spouse employment, this is a huge step forward. Thank you to the Biden-Harris Administration for your continue support of military families especially First Lady Dr. Biden and Joining Forces. MSJDN and its members stand by willing and able to assist in the movement to combat military spouse un- and underemployment along with the vast array of issues faced by military families during their military journey.
